The Making of Resonance

A hand holding a paintbrush makes a wide black brushstroke on a white surface

Last month, we introduced our new Resonance collection, a series of 14 tranquil designs to suit a variety of spaces. Each design is the result of a single stream of consciousness transferring itself from the mind to the page via a single paintbrush. Our in-house design team created these hand-painted brushstrokes and developed them into wallpaper patterns and murals in soft, tonal colorways. Here’s how this serene collection came to life.

To create this collection, our designers started by answering a prompt to develop large-scale brushstroke paintings for repeating wallpaper patterns or murals. The team was given limited, controlled materials for continuity across the collection: large rolls of white paper, black gesso, and large brushes. They were encouraged to work on a large scale, creating gestural movements across the page using the entire arm rather than just the hand or wrist. Listening to calming music or taking deep breaths before beginning was also recommended to create the most present, calm, and centered work possible.

Although all the designers were given the same task and materials, the final paintings varied in look and feel, showcasing the diverse creative energies and interpretations. With such a prolific array of work, the creative directors carefully curated a selection of pieces for the final collection. Some designs were scaled from a single painting, while others combined two artworks for a more significant impact. The design team then scanned each selected painting and meticulously refined them in Photoshop, ensuring they were free of dust or scratches while preserving the unique handmade qualities of the originals and thoughtfully assembled the repeats to ensure seamless repetition.

The creative directors then assembled a soft, tranquil color palette to accompany the high-contrast black-and-white designs. These subtle tone-on-tone colors allow the designs to be used in a wider variety of spaces and portray the serene energy of the collection as a whole. Inspired by earthy ceramics, these colors are reminiscent of desert hues and wildflowers, as well as the sky during various times of day and night. This in-house digital collection can also be customized with any colors to create the desired effect on the wall.
