Bringing Level 8 to Life with Wallcoverings

Interior of Maison Kasai in Level 8

Created by the Houston brothers of Houston Hospitality, Level 8 takes up the entire 8th floor of the Moxy DTLA hotel. The brothers are known for their attention to detail and ability to create genuinely unique, transportive atmospheres, which they execute brilliantly in all eight restaurants of Level 8. The space is a grown-up playground, with different restaurants and bars available to sample (or to book for an event). Entering each one means entering an immersive experience, from the entryway to the interior design to the chefs preparing food over a live fire right before your eyes. In these spaces, no detail is missed– especially not the wallcovering. Astek provided wallcoverings for three of the eight spaces, including custom design and faux mirrors.

Maison Kasai

In Maison Kasai, Japanese-French fusion comes together with a touch of theater as chefs prepare premium ingredients right in front of guests. The swanky Art Deco style, combined with Japanese-inspired touches, permeates the entire interior, highlighted with strategic lighting. Behind the circular bar shelf, Astek’s Auguste pattern plays off the multifaceted liquor bottles. Along one wall, a custom collage of Japanese Art Deco posters and advertisements adds color and a distinct 1920s feel. Concealed lighting illuminates the artwork, while ropes installed vertically in front of it create an unexpected multidimensional effect.

Mr. Wanderlust

Mr. Wanderlust is a two-part experience: first, the antechamber full of floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, artifacts from around the world, and a massive chandelier set the tone. Inside, the long bar and eclectic, sumptuous furnishings evoke the feeling of a well-traveled gentleman while guests enjoy signature cocktails. Live music and dancers add to the overall experience, backed by panels of velvet and faux antique gold mirrors, custom printed by Astek for extra drama.

Que Barbaro

The theatrical thread that runs through Level 8 is found in Que Barbaro, which serves South American cuisine cooked over an open flame. Both meat and vegetarian dishes can be found on the regularly changing menu, all infused with bold flavors. The design of the space relies on subdued maximalism: tropical, chinoiserie, Mexican, and Spanish elements combine to create a lavish dining experience. The rich color palette and multitude of patterns harmonize beautifully throughout. Along one wall, wood-paneled arches rise from cozy booths. Around the top of the arches, Astek’s blue faux tile finishes off the space beautifully, adding yet another pattern to the glorious mix.

Wallcoverings play a key role in creating an immersive experience, and we are proud to have contributed to making these amazing, dream-like spaces come to life. We hope that the restaurants of Level 8 can continue to romance and delight their patrons for years to come!
