Astek Wallcoverings in Film and TV
With awards season in full swing, we're taking this opportunity to highlight some television and film productions that feature our wallcoverings! From vintage patterns for period pieces to oversized tropical wallpaper for a current-day setting, our sister company, On Air Design, has provided wallpaper, murals, faux surfaces, and more to the film and TV industry for decades. Read on to see our original wallcoverings in these noteworthy productions.
Once Upon a Time… In Hollywood
Once Upon a Time… In Hollywood has it all: comedy, drama, cults, murder, you name it. Production designer Barbara Ling ensured that every part of the film felt true to 1969 Los Angeles, with no detail left overlooked. Keep an eye out for multiple vintage wallpaper patterns designed by Astek and used by the On Air team to create Ling's vision, including our Round Up Rodeo pattern seen in the Spahn Ranch scenes.
Griselda
Sofia Vergara's critically acclaimed titular role in Griselda is multifaceted, balancing the roles of single motherhood and super sharp drug lord. The swanky 70s vibe is continuous throughout the series, infecting everything from furniture to clothes to cars to–you guessed it—wallpaper. Here, production designer Knut Loewe chose a custom gold version of our Uptown pattern by Society of Wonderland to create groovy drama in the background.
Being the Ricardos tells the story of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz at different points in their careers. To capture the aesthetics of the 1930s through the 50s, production designer Jon Hutman turned to On Air to create art prints and custom wallpapers. From faux grasscloth to sweeping tropical murals, our wallpapers added the finishing touch to the world of Lucy—including our Pond pattern, shown here in Lucy's laundry room.
Better Call Saul, the fan-favorite prequel to Breaking Bad, follows Jimmy McGill's moral decline as he becomes the character fans know from Breaking Bad as Saul Goodman. The series was set and filmed in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and On Air Design provided our Art-Nouveau-inspired Provence pattern for this moody bar set.
Palm Royale
Palm Royale, set in 1969, follows Maxine Dellacorte-Simmons as she tries to become part of Palm Beach high society and its exclusive country club, the Palm Royale. We printed vintage wallpaper from our library of patterns, including some custom-colored versions created specifically to match production designer Jon Carlos's vision. Here, our Camber pattern adds the perfect Mid-Century touch to the salon set.
Presumed Innocent
Based on Scott Turow's 1987 novel of the same name, Presumed Innocent is a psychological, legal thriller that will keep you hooked. The series focuses on the tense environs of the courtroom, but production designer John Paino paid just as much attention to the home sets. In the bedroom, our Naupaka pattern adds a somber tropical flair.
Euphoria
It's been three years since the second season of Euphoria was released. With the third season rumored to be going into production this year, we're looking back at the custom wallpaper we created for the first two seasons. To give the sets their lived-in look, production designers Kay Lee, Michael Grasley, and Jason Baldwin Stewart called for custom wallpaper– much of it digitally recreated by the OA team from vintage wallpaper rolls. In Rue's bedroom, our dainty Green Floral pattern plays up the "childhood bedroom" feel, while our Wicker Octagons pattern adds retro flair to a basement set.
